WINDOWS 7!!!

By now I’m sure you’re aware that Window 7, the brand new operating system, is now in stores and is selling like hotcakes!  We’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to try it out here in the Digital Workshop since early October.  For the past few weeks we’ve been celebrating with a number of official Windows 7 Launch parties.  We’ve been enjoying some delicious treats and exploring some of the new features of Windows7.  It’s a great upgrade from previous version of Windows.  If you get a chance to give it a test drive I think you’ll find that it just makes using your computer so much easier. Click here to check out what Window 7 has to offer!

Black and White Creations (repost)

By request I am reposting a blog entry from a few months ago.  This is an editing technique that i cover in the session "Put Your Best Face Forward 2".  This is one of my favorite activities because it allows you to greatly draw attention to one particular object of the photo.  Take a look at the example about and give it a shot.  It's really not too difficult, but it might take a few tries to really get it down!  The following instructions are base on the latest version of Paint.  If you have an older version(which you do unless you have upgraded to Windows 7) you can look back to the entry I posted in May which includes instructions for older versions of Paint. Enjoy!!

1.  Find the photo that you wish to use and open it in Windows Live Photo Gallery (WLPG)

2.  Go to “extras” (at the top of window) and select “open with” and then “paint”

3.  Return to WLPG and convert that same picture to black and white(remember, you can access your editing tools by clicking on “fix” at the top of the WLPG window.

4.  Once it is black and white, open this in paint (the same way we did it in step 2) - now we have the same photo opened twice in paint, one in color and one black and white.  At this point you can close WLPG so to avoid any confusion.  From here on out we’ll only be working in Paint

5.  On the color photo locate the object(s) you want to remain colored

6.  Use the free-form selection tool(located in the "select" menu of the image section at the top of the Paint window) to trace the object-try to be as exact as you can.  To trace the object you must click and hold on the border of the item and draw around the whole perimeter-do not release  until you’re completely finished tracing!

7.  Go to the clipboard section of the "home" tab and select “copy”

8.  Switch to the back and white photo and go to the clipboard section of the "home" tab and click “paste”

9.  You’ll see the copied area appear, however it has a white background.  You can make the background transparent by clicking on "select" in the "image" section  of the "home" tab and selecting "transparent selection".  Relocate the object to where it belongs.  Be very precise! Save and you're finished!

TIP: One thing I would suggest is zooming in before selecting the area with the free-form tool.  You don’t have to select the whole area at once.  You can trace smaller areas and piece them together on your black and white photo-kind of like a puzzle. If you have questions or comments please click the “add a comment” link at the end of this entry.  I’d love to hear what you think. To see more photos of this type see the photo album entitled "black and white creations".

The New And Improved MovieMaker!

One of my favorite sessions that we offer here in the Digital Workshop is "Your Away From Home Move" in which we take your pictures and video clips and create a really great looking movie with titles, effects, music etc.   Well, throughout the last few months Microsoft had been working on a brand new version of MovieMaker(the program that we use to produce our videos) which until now was only available as a beta version which was pretty bare-boned.  The final version has finally be released and we are proudly implementing into our rotation of sessions.  The overall look and feel of the program has changed significantly.  One major change is that they have taken the "storyboard" and "timeline" views and fused them together to simply the way we view and edit our movies.  Admittedly, it takes a little while to get used to after working with the older versions, but once you become familiar with the layout, you'll realize that you have the same functionality that you had before, but at a much higher quality.  The quality of the final product blows the previous MovieMakers out of the water.  You can even publish your movies in 1080p!  The good news is that if you have Window Vista you can simply download the new version, now entitles Windows LIVE MovieMaker at download.live.com.  The bad news is that if you have Windows XP you will unfortunately not be able to run this on your computer(you'll just have to wait until you upgrade to Windows 7 to try it out!).

Margerie Glacier, Glacier Bay

Margerie Glacier (Glacier Bay, Alaska) is 21 miles long and 250 feet tall, with an additional 100 feet below the water line.  It was named for Emmanuel de Margerie (1862–1953), a highly regarded French geographer and geologist, who visited Glacier Bay in 1913.

Congratulations! You have triplets!

Here’s something fun for you to try!  Using Windows Live Photo Gallery’s panoramic stitch feature, you can put yourself in a photo two or more times!  The following photo was stitched together from three shots of the same guest who moved one seat over with each shot.  After seeing the result of the stitch, the guest responded, “I was beside myself with excitement for the Digital Workshop!”  We hope you will be, too, when you visit the Digital Workshop on your next Holland America Line cruise!

Ann Webbwrote:
I loved all of your tech classes.  I have been working hard on my web page that I created in your class.  I am now trying to get motivated to try and upload videos to it.  I wish that you had offered a class on that.  I'll use your directions from the Veendam site and hopefully it will work. Feel free to check out my website (awebb2@spaces.live.com/)

Ryan I really hated missing the beautiful Alaska scenery but I have been so impressed with what I learned with you and your handouts are very helpful.  I have already made a super video of our trip and have been busy putting Labels on my pictures with paint.  I have never used these so your seminars were great.  I have attended workshops on ship before but never came home with so many new skills.  Thanks!  GAry O'Hare Salina, KS

Hi Ryan,
I really enjoyed your classes. You really are a natural as a teacher.  I am having difficulty embedding photos in my Emails.  I get the JPEG numbers when I try to send photos rather than the actual photo embedded.....what am I doing wrong? or better yet, what should I be doing.  I do have the 'Show and Tell' page.  I also couldn't do the fancy stuff with them that we did in class.  Wish you could be here!  Georgette
